January 2011 Meeting Notes

Thanks to both EminentWare and Shavlik for great food and drink and for the two very interesting presentations. SCUP out of the box leaves us with nothing but Dell updates right now. The 1E and Adobe stuff went dead years ago. But both solutions we saw last night give us a much larger set of applications we can patch using the same SUP infrastructure we've already built. Shavlik simply gives us cab files to be imported into normal SCUP, so there is nothing new to learn. EminentWare makes SCUP optional, but they still maintain the exact same look and feel as SCUP for their console, but we see more options that normal SCUP doesn't offer.

Was there a clear winner? I don't think so. I asked around afterwards and it seemed that nobody could say that was product was superior. EminentWare mentioned that they have some big announcement at MMS, so if you go to MMS, you might want to stop by their booth to see what the big scoop is. Shavlik will be there too.

Note from EminentWare:

Thanks again for the opportunity to present our WSUS Extension Pack and 3rd Party Updates Pack to you last week at the MN SCCM User Group Meeting. As reminder:

  1. We provide updates for the applications listed in https://www.eminentware.com/cs2008/media/p/719.aspx
  2. Our solution provides an alternative to SCUP
  3. Our licensing is fairly inexpensive and is a perpetual license model - no license fee cost after the first year
